Many Calgary homeowners will choose natural stone tile for countertops or backsplashes, but overlook its potential as durable, luxury flooring. While marble may be too cold and granite too hard underfoot, there is another natural stone tile on the market great for indoor and outdoor flooring. Travertine offers a rustic, warm look to your home and is more comfortable and versatile than other stone varieties. Your local experts at Floor Coverings International Calgary would love to show you how to best use travertine in your own home.

Travertine Stone Tile Color and Porosity History

Travertine is a sedimentary stone that has been used in architecture and art for centuries. The majority of the world’s travertine deposits are in Italy and the readily available supply allowed the ancient Romans to take advantage of this elegant stone. Some of their most iconic buildings or pieces of art such as the Colosseum, the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, and Trevi Fountain were all made with travertine stone. Travertine quarries are now found in the United States, South America, and the Middle East and can be seen in more contemporary architecture such as the façade of The Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Travertine is a desirable stone for its warm, weathered, and rustic look. While granite and marble are very luxurious in appearance, they often seem cold and uninviting. Instead, choose travertine with its warm hues of tan, cream, gold, light brown, and even rusty red. No two stones will look the same and it is likely that a floor will have a mix of all these earthy tones. The weathered look evokes the ancient uses of travertine and can make your home feel like a Tuscan country villa or roman relic.

Travertine is incredibly versatile and can be finished in one of four styles to match the aesthetic of your home. The most popular finish is honed travertine but it can also be polished, brushed, or tumbled. Honed travertine is polished flat and brightens the colors but doesn’t have the glossy sheen of polished travertine that tends to be slippery underfoot. The surface has a matte texture and resembles traditional travertine. If you want your stone floors to look even more rustic, brushed or tumbled travertine is the style for you. Both options create a heavily textured surface but the lack of polish will result in muted coloring.

Travertine Stone Floors in CalgaryDurability

Travertine is an exceptionally durable stone and is great for high-traffic areas of your home. It has a measurement of hardness (MOH) comparable to marble but is also able to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations. It is a great choice for both indoor and outdoor settings such as mudrooms or patios. Travertine is a naturally porous stone with pits and holes that give it a more natural look. It is possible to fill travertine to increase its durability and also make it easier to maintain. With unfilled travertine, make sure to sweep or vacuum often to keep harmful particles from settling inside the stone. Travertine is also fairly sensitive to acidic substances and it is wise to avoid potent cleaners with lemon. However, filled travertine requires little maintenance and is practically waterproof.
